Building Permits in the RM of Hart Butte
A building permit is required for most construction, renovations, and development projects in the Rural Municipality of Hart Butte to ensure safety, compliance with zoning regulations, and proper land use planning. Obtaining a permit helps protect property values, ensures compliance with local bylaws, and promotes responsible growth in our community. Before starting your project, review the requirements below and submit your application. Regardless of whether a building permit is required for your project, a development permit needs to be obtained for all projects.
When is a Building Permit Required?
A permit is required for:
✔️ New home construction
✔️ Renovations and alterations affecting structural members or safety features (e.g. bedroom windows)
✔️ Garages and carports
✔️ Decks and platforms more than 12" above ground level
✔️ RTM, modular and manufactured homes
✔️ Additions to existing buildings
✔️ Basement development
✔️ Secondary suites
✔️ Accessory buildings greater than 10m²
✔️ Fireplaces, wood stoves and heaters
✔️ Retaining walls that could affect a structure or are near a property
✔️ Foundation repairs or replacements
✔️ Roof replacements
✔️ Solar panels that are roof mount
✔️ Change to the use of the building
✔️ Temporary buildings or structures
✔️ Relocating an existing building
✔️ Remedying an unsafe condition or fire inspection order
✔️ Demolishing a building
A permit may NOT be required for:
❌ Fences
❌ Driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots
❌ Replacement of materials like shingles or siding, or cosmetic upgrades not affecting structural members or safety features
❌ Accessory buildings less than 10 m² (e.g. garden sheds or tool sheds)

How to Apply for a Building Permit
1️⃣ Apply for a Development Permit from the RM office
2️⃣ Download the Application Form – Visit the Professional Building Inspections website
3️⃣ Submit Supporting Documents – Include site plans, blueprints, and project details.
4️⃣ Pay the Permit Fee – Fees vary based on project size and type.
5️⃣ Approval Process – Applications are reviewed for compliance with zoning and bylaws, proper setbacks and lot coverage and safety and environmental considerations.
6️⃣ Receive Your Permit – Once approved, you’ll receive your official building permit.
Zoning & Development Regulations
